MEDICA 2021: Managing diabetes in the digital age – Beurer simplifies blood glucose measurement with the GL 48 and GL 49

There are currently around eight million people with diabetes in Germany and more than 600,000 new cases are added every year. According to estimates, the number of unreported cases is almost two million more. While most people can live well with diabetes, the diagnosis also requires some adjustments in everyday life. Knowing your own blood glucose level is always particularly important. Beurer is now simplifying blood glucose measurement with the two new products GL 48 and GL 49, which will be presented at MEDICA 2021 in Düsseldorf.

Many diabetic people have to measure their blood glucose before every meal. The measurement determines how high a dose of insulin (which lowers blood glucose) needs to be injected. This requires the user to prick their finger. The drop of blood that is produced is examined for its glucose content using a measuring device. The new Beurer GL 48 and GL 49 blood glucose monitors are ideal for daily use and simplify the measurement process by producing a reliable result in just five seconds.

Handy test strips and hygienic application
A coloured target scale with the colours green, yellow and red on the display also helps to interpret the results. The handy test strips make it easy to determine the blood glucose level. Using the measurement marking, the measurement data can be assigned to specific events – for example, for comparing the blood glucose values before or after eating or exercising. The blood volume check assures that a sufficient quantity of blood has been delivered for the measurement. If the quantity is insufficient, an error message appears directly on the devices. All values can be read optimally on the illuminated displays, which come with intuitive user guidance. The memory space is sufficient for 900 measurements each. After the measurement, the strip ejection function ensures that the blood sample is disposed of hygienically. Both devices determine values in the measurement range 20-630 mg/dL or 1.1-35.0 mmol/L and are equipped with an automatic switch-off function. Each supplied starter set also includes a lancing device and 10 test strips and lancets.

Connect interface enables digital blood glucose diary
The difference between GL 48 and GL 49 is their connectivity. With the Beurer GL 49, the data can be easily downloaded to the "beurer HealthManager" app or the new "beurer HealthManager Pro" app via Bluetooth® immediately after measurement and clearly documented in a digital format. With both blood glucose monitors, data can also be transferred to the PC with a USB cable, for example to keep a practical blood glucose diary. These features greatly simplify the lives of people with diabetes by ensuring that all of their values are always available at a glance.

What is diabetes?
Diabetes mellitus – commonly known as diabetes – is a generic term for various diseases of metabolism that lead to increased levels of blood glucose. Those affected have a deficiency of the hormone insulin and/or the effect of insulin on them is reduced. Different forms of diabetes are distinguished medically. The main forms are type 1 and type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes is characterised by an insulin deficiency, which is often diagnosed in childhood or adolescence. The more common form is type 2 diabetes, where the body becomes less sensitive to insulin as it gets older, for example due to a genetic predisposition or lack of exercise.
