Pay attention to menopausal skin
You've probably noticed changes to your skin during menopause. A dry complexion with impurities, spots and red blemishes is not uncommon. You should pay special attention to your skin from the start of these hormonal changes. With routine skincare, you can effectively prevent skin problems. But targeted pelvic floor training does even more.
Did you know: In addition to the visible changes to your skin, the connective tissue and muscles of your intimate area are also weakened. Targeted pelvic floor training tightens the connective tissue of your intimate area and can even have a preventative effect against bladder weakness and incontinence.

How hormones effect your skin
Hormones were already involved in changes to your body during puberty. In addition to emotional changes, you'll have also noticed physical changes to your skin such as pimples and impurities. In menopause, the fluctuating hormone balance can trigger skin changes again. The variable hormone changes can result in dry skin and acne.
From the age of 50, your skin can lose elasticity and deeper wrinkles can begin to appear (see Better Health Life, 2022). But in menopause, the focus is not only on your facial skin. The overall appearance of your skin changes. Wounds take longer to heal, the skin's firmness diminishes and you'll find more pigmentation.
"Not every skin change comes at once."
Skin may change several times during the different stages of menopause. In perimenopause, which begins a few years before menopause, collagen production already decreases and skin becomes drier. Acne can develop on your face and chest. If you have not had menstrual bleeding for 12 months, you could have started the menopause. As oestrogen continues to decrease, your skin will lose firmness, become thinner, and become more sensitive to the environment and UV radiation (cf. DERMASENSE, 2018).
In the final phase of menopause, your skin can continue to age and wrinkles begin to develop. The postmenopausal period can last up to the age of 65 years old. Your body no longer produces oestrogen, and the dryness of your skin and mucous membranes increases.
One of the main factors of ageing skin is decreasing oestrogen levels in your body. As a result, this leads to a loss of the collagen and elastin proteins responsible for the firmness of your skin (cf. NAYA, 2021).
Gentle routine skin care for menopausal skin
Even if the ageing process can't be stopped, you can support your skin with gentle care. Which treatments will benefit your skin the most largely depends on the environment around you. Especially in the winter months, the sebaceous glands produce less fat and your skin becomes drier. A moisturising serum is recommended to start the day in cold weather without feeling tight on the skin. Apply after cleansing and before applying your daily moisturiser. A warm water spray can keep your skin hydrated throughout the day.
"Especially during menopause, your skin needs routine care. Just include them at all times when brushing your teeth."
To care for your skin, you should always protect yourself from UV radiation during the summer months with a high sun protection factor (SPF 50+). Without SPF, spend no longer than 15 minutes in the sun to benefit from natural vitamin D. Vitamin D from the sun also contributes to the health of your bones and supports your body in absorbing calcium.
Deep cleansing is essential for proper skin care. Gently cleanse your face and neckline. Cleansing milk and mild cleansing lotions are best for this. Finishing with a gentle tonic builds up your skin's acid resistance, and reduces bacteria growth, redness and itching. After cleansing, the right day or night cream will leave your skin feeling soft and hydrated. Gently massage the cream into your skin for the best results.
Ingredients such as Glycerin, Hyaluronic Acid and Urea give your skin optimal hydration during menopause. Pure retinol, known as vitamin A, also stimulates cell and collagen production and reduces wrinkles and age spots. For best results, retinol skincare products should be applied at night (cf. Pharmacy ADHOC, 2017).
Noticeable anti-ageing with Beurer facial care
You can achieve noticeable anti-ageing effects and smoother, healthier-looking skin with the Beurer FC 90 Pureo Ionic Skin Care anti-ageing facial care. The activating heat function ensures soft and supple skin. The revitalising cooling function leaves your skin feeling fresher and healthier. Use the ion function alongside the intensive Cleaning Milk and Advanced Hydrolift Cream to create beautifully radiant skin.

Water is your best friend! Drink about 2 litres of water or diluted juice daily to give your skin a good base of moisture. Taking a shower that is too hot can also dry your skin.
Pelvic floor training to prevent invisible skin changes
How can pelvic floor training prevent skin problems? After all, you are dealing with the ageing process you see in your face. The decreasing oestrogen level not only affects visible skin but also all mucous membranes. This causes changes to the vaginal wall, bladder and control. Your skin in the intimate area will have poorer blood flow, it will become thinner and drier, and it will also be less elastic. As a result, it is more susceptible to infection and injury. The support and holding function of the pelvic floor can also decrease and result in bladder weakness (cf. Frankfurter Rundschau, 2019).
You can integrate pelvic floor exercises into everyday life with little effort, just like caring for your skin. Repeat each exercise about five to eight times.
- Stand in a comfortable position and place your hands on your buttocks. Consciously pull your pelvic floor muscles upwards and relax again
- Stretch your arms out to the side and alternately pull one leg towards the chest. Hold this position for about 10 seconds per leg
- Lie down on the floor with your knees up and feet flat on the floor. Raise your buttocks as you exhale, hold for about three seconds and return to your original position as you inhale
The connective tissue of the pelvic floor can still be trained effectively with aids. The Beurer PT 20 Pelvi Strong pelvic floor training aid provides you with individual options for this. Various weights made of skin-friendly, latex-free material help to strengthen your weakened muscles. Start with the lightest weight and shortest training time and increase your intensity according to your progress. You can carry the weight for all your everyday activities.
Pelvic floor exercises can be done as part of your everyday routine. Are you bathing and doign your skincare routine? Great, then pull your pelvic floor muscles up inwards and relax them again. Once your skincare routine is complete, you've effectively trained your pelvic floor at the same time.
Accept yourself as you are
Many things change during menopause. This can affect you emotionally as well as physically. Sometimes as a result of the changes you see in the mirror compared to a younger you. You now see wrinkles, blemishes and age spots. There are many ways to effectively counteract the ageing process of the skin and tighten the connective tissue with skincare and pelvic floor training. This not only revives your skin but also your senses.
By accepting menopause, you can make a big improvement in your quality of life.
