Long-term hair removal using IPL – gentle hair removal for the skin

As individual as people and their cultures are, so are the needs when it comes to hair removal. Especially in the summer, we show more skin with lighter clothing. But the razor bumps or stubble that come with many hair removal methods are uncomfortable for some and restrictive. To achieve long-term carefree and beautiful results, consider permanent hair removal with an IPL device.

What is IPL and what are the differences to the laser method?

IPL stands for "Intense Pulsed Light". This light is emitted by the IPL device and targets the melanin in the hair follicles. The concentrated heat energy cauterises the hair root and prevents further hair production. The hairs simply fall out and do not regrow (for a longer period of time). The same happens with laser technology.

The difference lies in the direction of the light. The laser has a monochromatic coherent light source that can treat each hair root individually. An IPL device has a broadband pulsed light source that has a bit more scatter. This makes the use of IPL devices at home easy and protects against the risk of burns. Laser treatments cannot be use at home, only by trained personnel in a beauty salon.

Is permanent hair removal using IPL harmful to health?

No, the use of an IPL device is not harmful to health. The energy emitted only works in the hair tunnel and there is no systemic effect in the body. The technology is dermatologically confirmed and clinically tested.

Beurer IPL devices also have a professionally coordinated safety system with integrated UV protection and the 2-in-1 skin type and skin contact sensor. This ensures that light pulses are only emitted if the skin pigmentation allows it. In addition, the device only triggers when there is complete contact from the surface of the device with the skin, so the eyes are spared. The UV filter protects the skin to be treated from harmful UV rays. The IPL devices can therefore be used at home without any concerns.

Is the IPL method suitable for everyone?

Hair removal using an IPL device cannot be applied to every skin tone. With dark skin, too much light can be absorbed. Hair which is too light does not contain enough melanin for the treatment to be effective. The treatment is also ineffective on red or grey hair. Beurer IPL devices can be used with (naturally) "light to black hair" and "light to medium brown skin colour". The application on red or grey hair is ineffective. Likewise, treatment on very dark skin, which is not suitable for treatment with IPL. Tattooed areas are equivalent to dark skin in terms of points, so an IPL device should not be used on these parts.

How long-lasting are the results after IPL treatment?

Generally, results of hair removal using an IPL device are visible after a few applications. After 3 – 4 treatments, a hair reduction of almost 50% can be achieved. However, the treatment at home must be repeated after several months. The hair root is damaged, but the energy from the devices is not sufficient to permanently destroy the hair root. Thus, the hair starts to grow again after about 18 – 24 months and a new treatment is required. This, of course, depends entirely on the individual condition of the hairs.

Which body parts can be treated?

An IPL device can be used on the face, legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, as well as on the chest and back in men. The device is not suitable for removing beard hair. Also, the device should only be used on the face below the cheek line. In the intimate area, the device should not be held directly on the mucous membrane.

All about using the IPL device

How is an IPL device used?

The exact application varies from device to device. Generally, however, the treatment should be carried out several times over a period of about 4 months in order to permanently remove the hairs. Depending on the body region, an application takes between 5 and 20 minutes. After setting the right energy level for the body region using the device, you hold the device step by step on each spot in the area to be treated and always trigger a light pulse.

How an IPL device works in three steps: Melanin in the hair absorbs the light. Generated heat deactivates hair follicles. Hair falls out and does not grow back

For easier application, Beurer IPL devices can be connected to the "beurer myIPL" app, where you can find helpful tutorials among other things.

Advantages of IPL treatment

  • No razor bumps or ingrown hairs

The biggest advantage of the IPL method is that the hairs simply fall out after successful application. This prevents razor bumps or ingrown hairs.

  • Long-term results

After the hair roots have been damaged, hairs do not regrow for up to 24 months.

  • Time-saving

Although the application has to be carried out more often at the beginning, once all hair roots have been removed, no further treatment is necessary for a long time.

  • Painless treatment

The correct application of an IPL device at home is painless. Only a slight pulling or tingling sensation can be felt. The body part can get a bit warm; this can be a bit uncomfortable at most, but in no case really painful.

Disadvantages of IPL treatment

  • Not suitable for every hair type

The treatment does not work on red or grey hair or particularly light or dark skin.

  • Results are only visible after weeks

Until you have peace from hairs for months, the treatment can be a bit tedious. The body areas must first be treated every 2 weeks, later every 4-6 weeks, until visibly no more hairs regrow.

  • Application not recommended in summer

After an IPL treatment, the skin should not be exposed to direct sunlight for at least a week. Also, going to a solarium or sauna during this time is not recommended.

Tips for preparation and follow-up care

Preparation:

  • Do not apply creams, gels or body lotion. The treatment should be applied to clean, completely dry skin.

  • Shave before the treatment so that the hairs are as short as possible. If the hairs are not removed before the application, the treatment is less effective. In addition, the treatment can be more uncomfortable, as the hair shaft absorbs more energy.

  • If you usually epilate or wax, then wait one to two days until the IPL treatment.

Follow-up care:

  • Use a light lotion or a cooling gel, e.g. Aloe Vera gel, to soothe the skin.

  • Avoid direct sunlight, as the skin can be irritated and prone to sunburn.
