Frequently Asked Questions
Does the use of heating pads, electric blankets, underblankets or foot warmers produce electromagnetic pollution?
Under the term "electrosmog", electrical and magnetic fields of various characteristics (e.g., pulsed in mobile phones) and various frequencies (e.g., 50 Hz in operations at 230 V network voltage) are summarised. Basically, electric and magnetic fields are generated during the use of all electrically operated products as well as through the electrical house installation. The electric and magnetic fields generated by the use of heating pads, electric blankets, underfloor heating, and heated blankets lie with their regulations far below the guidelines recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the mandatory limits prescribed by the German legislator:
- Electric field strength: max. 5000 V/m
- Magnetic field strength: max. 80 A/m
- Magnetic flux density: max. 100 microtesla
Why isn't my product getting hot enough?
Heat pad:
Depending on the model of the heat pad and the type of application, it can take up to 15 minutes after switching on until the heat pad feels warm in the highest setting. The maximum end temperature is reached at least after about 30 minutes.
Foot warmer:
Depending on the location, it can take up to 15 minutes after switching on until the foot warmer feels warm in the highest setting. Place the foot warmer on a carpet or a similar insulating underlay for quicker heating. The maximum end temperature is reached at least after about 30 minutes.
Heated underblanket:
Depending on the model of the heated underblanket and the surrounding conditions (room temperature, mattress type, bedding), it can take up to 30 minutes after switching on until the heated underblanket feels warm in the highest setting. To prevent the escape of heat, the heated underblanket must be completely covered. The maximum end temperature is reached at least after about 60 minutes.
Heated throw:
Depending on the model of the heated throw and the room temperature, it can take up to 15 minutes after switching on until the heated throw feels warm in the highest setting. The maximum end temperature is reached at least after about 30 minutes.
My heat product is not working. What can I do?
Following points you can check:
- With thermostats equipped with a removable switch, please first check if the plug connection between the switch and the thermostat is fully assembled.
- Then check if the mains plug of the switch is connected to a functioning socket.
- Possibly check the function of the socket with a functioning device, such as a floor lamp or a vacuum cleaner.
- Then turn on your thermostat.
If the control light or the temperature sensor or the display of the switch does not light up, an automatic shutdown of your thermostat by the safety system may have occurred.
Information:
Almost all our thermostats are equipped with a safety system. The sensor technology of the safety system prevents overheating of the thermostat over its entire surface by automatic shutdown in case of failure.
If the safety system has automatically switched off, the control light or the temperature sensor or the display of the switch will no longer be illuminated in the switched-on state.
Please note that your thermostat may no longer be operated after a failure for safety reasons and must be sent to the specified service address.
Under no circumstances connect your defective thermostat to another switch of the same type. This would also lead to a final shutdown by the safety system in the switch. We are happy to check your thermostat free of charge.
Can heat devices be used by individuals with pacemakers?
The electric and magnetic fields emanating from your heating product can potentially disrupt the function of your pacemaker under certain circumstances. However, they are well below the threshold values:
- Electric field strength: max. 5000 V/m
- Magnetic field strength: max. 80 A/m
- Magnetic flux density: max. 100 microtesla
Please consult your doctor and the manufacturer of your pacemaker before using your heating product.
Information:
There are a variety of pacemaker manufacturers, technologies, and implementations. They also differ in their resistance to electrical and magnetic fields. Therefore, please consult your doctor and the manufacturer of your pacemaker before using your heating product. If in doubt, it is always advisable to switch off a pacemaker before using an electric heating product. However, you can still use your heated underblanket to pre-warm your bed, as long as you are not lying in it.
To pre-warm your bed, cover your heated underblanket completely with the top bed cover and operate it at the highest temperature setting for at least 30 minutes. Then turn off your heated underblanket. When turned off, no electric or magnetic fields are emitted from the heated underblanket.
As there are many different pacemakers with various technologies and thus different emission behaviours against electromagnetic radiation emitted by other electrical/electronic devices, such as a hairdryer or heating products, the mechanical parameters should also be considered, e.g., where on the body the pacemaker is implanted. Here arises the question: Can the use of the heating product at this location or in the immediate vicinity negatively influence the secure position of the pacemaker and possibly its function?
In any case, a consultation with a doctor should be held before using a heating product. In doubt, always refrain from using it.
What is the final temperature?
The maximum achievable temperature depends on many factors, including the product (heat pads, foot warmers, heated underblankets, heated throws), its design (e.g., with or without automatic shut-off), and the room temperature. Therefore, only average and standardised measurements at a room temperature of 20°C (+/- 5°C) can be provided.
For each product, specific measurement conditions are established. The individual values cannot be compared with each other. According to this, the core temperature, i.e., the temperature in the centre of the heated area, is:
- Heat pads: 65°C - 70°C
- Foot warmers: 45°C - 50°C
- Heated underblankets: 60°C - 65°C
- Heated throws: 40°C - 50°C
To ensure repeatable and comparable measurements for heating products, the sensor construction must comply with the specifications of the IEC EN 60335-2-17 standard. The product is covered from below and above with precisely defined insulating materials. Measurements are made with an equally precisely defined copper plate sensor. During the measurement, a room temperature of 20°C is maintained. If all conditions are met, the stated temperatures can be measured. Other measurement conditions lead to different, incomparable, and non-repeatable results.
